Tis The Season

This afternoon we went to see the Christmas Spectacular at Essex Alliance Church.  We expected to see Calvin there because his mom is in the show.  But we also saw other friends including Ross and his parents.

The show was great, and did a good job of getting us in the mood for Christmas.

Minecraft Buddies

Patrick's friends met up at AWANA last night and then spent the night here.

This morning they were up (somewhat) early to spend a little time in Minecraft before the party broke up.

Frame of Reference

Have you ever wondered how large Harry Potter's owl, Hedwig, is?

The Snowy Owl's wing is almost as long as Patrick's arm.

A 21st Century Play-date

Today I am using my limited "screen time" to play Minecraft online with my buddy who lives on the other side of town. We hung out together all afternoon yesterday, but it was mostly outside. Today, we want to play Minecraft. We are on a Minecraft server together and talking on the phone at the same time.

Creativity at its finest.

Patrick's friend, Trevor, came over to hang out yesterday after their clay camp glazing workshop. He ended up spending the night and this morning the boys got creative.

In an Audubon camp a few years ago, Patrick learned about some of the ways Indians made pigments. The boys found some colorful rocks around our house, wetted them, and rubbed them into paste...pigments.

With their war paints on, it was time to put on head wear and weapons. Look out! I see White Man!

Fun trip to OFES

Patrick went to OFES (Outreach for Earth Stewardship) to feed the nocturnal raptors and had an opportunity to assist his mentor with some bird maintenance; beak filing, nail clipping, and new jesses. When they were done, Patrick got to walk the little guy home to Aviary #1.

Fishing Season Open!

This is Patrick's third catch of the day and his largest catch ever (more than three pounds). She's full of eggs so he put her back in the lake.

Let the fishing season begin!

Last Day of School

This picture was taken just before we began the run-a-thon on our last day of school. This is (most of) Trinity Baptist School.

Good looks...AND brains!

Today was the annual academic bowl at Trinity. Another Christian school joined in for the testing of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in the subjects of math, science, history, English, and Old and New Testament. After the written tests they have a spelling bee and award ceremony.

Patrick took first place for fourth grade English, and second place for science.

Spring School Program

Today is Patrick's spring school program. I am so glad that he gets to do stuff like this, and the whole school participates, which makes it even better.

He has two parts in two different parts of the program. His first role is as "friend", but by the time I could get a good photo, he was dressed as a king and the show was over.

Feeding the Raptors

It was a beautiful day today, and a great day for feeding the nocturnal raptors at Outreach for Earth Stewardship.

First Fishing of 2012

Patrick puts his hook in the water for the first time this season. Yes, he's wearing a winter coat, and yes, I'm behind the camera wrapped in a double layer fleece blanket in the sun.

It's Spring Break and we've tried to do something fun and/or outside (it's been a rainy week) every day. Today, we fish.

A Great Good Friday

Patrick didn't have school today (since it's Good Friday) so he had a play date with two of his buddies.

They built a hunting lodge with the "kinder cabin" materials that Jörg and Patrick made last summer.

Raptor Rescue

Patrick has really been enjoying his work at the Outreach for Earth Stewardship raptor rescue.

He works there every week feeding the nocturnal birds (owls). During Spring Break week, he looks forward to an extra visit to feed the diurnal (day feeding) birds (hawks, kestrels, etc.). It should be fun.

We are back!

We just got back from a two-week vacation to San Andres, Colombia where we went scuba diving almost every day, and I received my Junior Open Water certification!

(above) That's me (yellow tank) demonstrating my fin pivot to my instructor.
That's me checking out the inside of a giant sponge.
That's me in front of a shipwreck.
That's me going through a coral tunnel at Blue Wall.
That's me and my fish lunch.  It was super fresh (caught that morning) and it still had its fins, scales, and eyes!

Blue Wall

There goes Patrick, diving a crevice during our first dive today. We have eagerly waited for the weather and dive crew (a small group rather than a full boat of mixed skill levels) to work out so that we could dive Blue Wall. Today was the day!

The captain (who has the final word on where he drives the boat) said yes, the weather was acceptable, and the dive crew was just us; Jörg, Patrick, and me (and our dive guide and friend Werner, of course).

Blue Wall is so spectacular because it is a deep dive (120-130') that usually provides near perfect visibility, and fabulous views of an immense coral wall. The wild surface action today (huge waves) did little to dampen the effects of this wonderful dive spot.

Certified

Today, Patrick completed his Junior Open Water scuba certification.

He finished the quizzes and tests earlier in the week, and has had ten dives (so far) to demonstrate his underwater skills. His deepest dive to-date has been 106 feet.

Patrick's last step in certification was to assemble his own equipment (pictured).

Angry Birds goes big screen

There's something humorous about watching Patrick play Angry Birds on the big screen (iPad connected via HDMI to the TV). Who needs Wii? Or cable? Or Dish? LOL

Board Buster!

Patrick was very unhappy about having to go to Tae Kwon Do today (not one of his usual days), but it turned out to be a good class. Since becoming a Red Stripe, it's all about the pushups; Red Stripes and Red Belts have to do pushups at the drop of a hat. Today, he broke his first board. He was very proud.

(Jörg also broke his first board.)
